چکیده

Magnetic holes are plasma structures that trap a large number of particles in magnetic field is weaker than the its surroundings. The unprecedented high time-resolution observations by NASA's Magnetospheric Multi-Scale (MMS) mission enable us to study particle dynamics Earth's magnetosheath great detail. We reveal local generation mechanism whistler waves combination Landau-resonant and cyclotron-resonant wave-particle interactions electrons response large-scale evolution hole. As hole converges, pair counter-streaming electron beams form near hole's center as consequence combined action betatron Fermi effects. trigger slightly-oblique waves. Our conceptual prediction supported remarkable agreement between our numerical predictions from Arbitrary Linear Plasma Solver (ALPS). shows fundamental space astrophysical plasmas.

Generation of whistler waves by a rotating magnetic field source

The paper discusses the generation of polarized whistler waves radiated from a rotating magnetic field source created via a novel phased orthogonal two loop antenna. The results of linear three-dimensional electron magnetohydrodynamics simulations along with experiments on the generation whistler waves by the rotating magnetic field source performed in the large plasma device are presented. Com...

Autoresonant phase-space holes in plasmas.

Electron phase-space holes are formed and controlled in a plasma by adiabatic nonlinear phase locking (autoresonance) with a chirped frequency driving wave. The process has a threshold on the driving amplitude and involves dragging a void region in phase space into the bulk of the distribution via persistent Cherenkov-type resonance.

Formation of Power-law Energy Spectra in Space Plasmas by Stochastic Acceleration due to Whistler-Mode Waves

A non-relativistic Fokker-Planck equation for the electron distribution function is formulated incorporating the effects of stochastic acceleration by whistlermode waves and Coulomb collisions. The stationary solution f to the equation, subject to a zero-flux boundary condition, is found to be a generalized Lorentzian (or kappa) distribution, which satisfies f ∝ v for large velocity v, where κ ...

Detection of Whistler Waves

A whistler wave is a very low frequency electromagnetic wave generated by lightning discharges. As the electromagnetic wave travels through the plasma environments of the ionosphere and magnetosphere, it undergoes dispersion of a several thousand kilohertz. Because the propagation velocity decreases with frequency, the lower frequency components of the wave arrive later than the higher frequenc...

Collisionless magnetic reconnection in space plasmas

*Correspondence: Rudolf A. Treumann, International Space Science Institute Bern, Hallerstrasse 6, CH-3012 Bern, Switzerland e-mail: [email protected] Magnetic reconnection, the merging of oppositely directed magnetic fields that leads to field reconfiguration, plasma heating, jetting and acceleration, is one of the most celebrated processes in collisionless plasmas. It requires the violation...
